Town Hall 🏫

Did you know that every Tuesday, we hold a public Town Hall event on Discord? This is where you can ask Team Scrimba anything and hear back immediately. This week, the things we discussed included:

Per is in the Bay Area! 🇺🇸 He has been to see the 🍎 Apple headquarters (underwhelming) and lots of other headquarters (more exciting 🤩). He's also had a tonne of meetings with exciting people this week👀

Leanne has been working on ironing out our group purchase discount process - so if you have some buddies/colleagues/neighbors who'd like to learn to code, keep an 👁️ out for further announcements

Tom is working on more JavaScript material for the Career Path, including a suuuuper cool solo project! It will be ready soon! 🚀

Alex talked about what Quincy Larson from FreeCodeCamp said to him on his latest podcast episode, "Learning to code is a motivation challenge more than anything."

📊 We ran a poll: how motivated are you to keep learning to code and be successful? We also invited people to let us know in the chat how they're feeling regarding motivation ☀️

As usual, we celebrated this week's new hires (5 new hires!!)

We talked about the wide range of industries we've seen Scrimba students switch from over the years.

We talked about job hunt stress, and how it is 100% fine to take a break when you need to.

Finally, we talked about the new javascript-help forum channel - a brand new way of organizing your coding questions! Give it a try, either to ask, answer or browse questions, and let us know what you think! If it's a success, we'll roll it out to other channels as well.

New Hires 🎉

Big congratulations to all the Scrimba students who've landed jobs this week! 🥳

Jose announcing the new job - I just signed my contract for an upcoming internship with a very, very nice company with very nice people and an interesting product. It's weird to know where a bootcamp can actually take you, but better to know you can take yourself even further if you put the time and effort to hone your skills, help other people and make stuff you're passionate about. I have always been adamant on having my own work as my presentation card, I could be doing intricate Twitter or YouTube clones (and I have with Twitter), but I personally feel it was my passion for developing gaming tooling for myself and others what got me this role, so that is what I want to share today. Find your passion, and find gaps that you can fill, even with the smallest bit of code, and showcase your skills very proudly, even if they are not your best code. You can learn a job, but you can't grow passion out of nothing. Although I got busy with this whole thing and wasn't participating much as of lately, I am thankful I found this community and that I was able to share some of my knowledge, and discuss stuff with very interesting people. This kept me sharp and motivated, and I very honestly haven't found a community like Scrimba. — Jolly good, Jose!

Jose has signed a contract for an internship! Hopefully, it is the start of a long career that will take him into the gaming sector! 🎮

Ahmed announcing the new job - Well this is going to be something kinda different. I kinda hired myself. I decided to make a startup company, with a help of few friends. Never thought that I could ever do something like that, in the start I was scared, knowing that this industry is very competitive, but if you never try you will never know. A HUGEEE thanks to Scrimba, because I was inspired by their work! Still working on my official website for my startup, so yeah, chasing the dream baby, getting in contact with clients, planning future projects and plans! Let's gooooo — Awe-inspiring, Ahmed!

Ahmed has hired himself! With some friends, he is forming a startup! Now we don’t know what this startup will do, we just hope it is not an online learning platform involving video tutorials that instantly become code editors when u press pause..... 😅

Ahmed says he is working on the site and hopefully he will share it with us here when it is up and running! 👀

Spencer announcing the new job - I'm absolutely thrilled to announce that I got hired! After using Scrimba for 5 months I was able to land a fully remote role as a Front-End Developer. If I can give everyone moving towards this goal some advice it would be: 1. Be consistent, show up day after day keep improving. 2. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Even if you feel underqualified, make them say no to you, never disqualify yourself. Rejection only means your one step closer to acceptance. 3. Believe in yourself. No matter where you're starting from and what your circumstances are, you can achieve almost anything if you want it bad enough. Keep grinding everyone, you will get there, I promise! — Super, Spencer!

Spencer has landed a fully remote job as a front-end dev after 5 months at Scrimba! 😮

He has also given us some advice…

Be consistent.
Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

Noah announcing the new job - I found a 3 months internship and now working at it remotely — Nailed it, Noah!

Noah has got a remote internship in React at a training company. No more info from Noah, but all good stuff, so congrats! 💪

Jamie announcing the new job - I got hired!!! After a few months of Scrimba I've landed my dream job. My journey from butcher to Shopify front-end developer begins next month. Massive thank you to Alex from Scrimba and all the amazing guests for the Scrimba podcast. And of course Per from Scrimba for everything! Thanks also to everyone I've spoken with here, I've not posted much but when I have you've all been real supportive. — Joy to Jamie!

Jamie has successfully moved from butcher to Shopify front-end developer!

Anthony announcing the new job - I got hired!( Hopefully this can motivate my fellow Aussies!) I don't have a tech background and my coding journey from transitioning as an eye specialist to a front-end graduate position lasted 6 months. It was a lot of codecademy and scrimba (Bob from Scrimba and Kevin Powell are amazing). It can get quite demotivating seeing influencers market tech as super easy to get into... so why hasn't it happened to me yet??? The reality is lots of hours, dedication, late nights, feelings of inadequacy. Once you accept the path is not easy, it somehow becomes easier. You get less frustrated because you understand this is MEANT to be hard. Improve by 1% everyday and trust in the process! I have to thank Alex from Scrimba and the podcast, you were my daily source of motivation and inspiration — Awesome, Anthony!

It can be stressful to pick the perfect color palette for your next project... but not if you use Color Hunt!

Leanne is taking a break from streaming next week but she's back on October 5th with not one but two eminent Scrimba teachers, Bob Ziroll and Treasure Porth.

They will both be live-coding the same password generator app, with Bob doing so in React and Treasure using Vue.

They'll look at:
💻 Rendering the app on the screen
💻 Passing state through the app
💻 Any limitations of their frameworks

Scrimba Podcast 🎙️

Meet Chris McCoy 🇺🇸! He's a pastor who did odd jobs on the side. But he was always interested in coding! Somewhere between working retail and doing food delivery, he realized he needed something more stimulating. Nine months later, he landed not one but two job offers as a junior developer!

In this episode, he shares his approach to posting and being actively present on LinkedIn. Spoiler alert: it doesn't have to be complicated.

You'll also learn more about internships. Chris landed one, which turned out to be pretty cool! What do companies look for in an intern? Should you become one, and how? 🤔 He also shares how he approached learning to code and found a balance between learning and work. Chris and Alex also discuss what you can learn from odd jobs.

Live-code Fun! 💜

We're often asked whether there's a dark mode on Scrimba, so this week, Leanne and Michael coded up a dark/light mode toggle with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript!

They looked at:
🌞 How to code a toggle switch
🌜 Creating the light and dark modes with CSS and CSS variables
🌞 Testing the themes with Dev Tools
🌜 Using media queries to respect the user's system preferences
